The word "Hamburger" comes from Hamburg, Germany; the inhabitants of this city are also known as "Pork Eaters" in German. In Germany, local traditional snacks are often named after the place of origin, like the Frankfurter (also known as a hotdog), the Berliner (a jam doughnut) or Thuringer (Bratwurst). In Hamburg it was common to put a piece of roast pork into a roll, called Rundstuck warm, although this is missing the "essence" of the modern hamburger, which is ground meat. However, another theory states that in Hamburg, meatscraps similar to modern ground beef were served on a Brotchen,[2] a round bun-shaped piece of bread. It is said that German immigrants then took the Hamburger to the United States.[2]

Charlie Nagreen 1885, Seymour, Wisconsin. An early claim in U.S. history to creating the hamburger is from the city of Seymour, Wisconsin. According to local history, a vendor named Charlie Nagreen served the world's first hamburger at the Seymour Fair of 1885. After becoming frustrated that the meatballs he was attempting to grill were taking too long to cook, Charlie reportedly decided to flatten a meatball with his spatula to decrease the grilling time and he placed it between slices of bread to increase portability. Nagreen returned to the fair and sold hamburgers for 66 years. The city of Seymour has erected a 16 foot statue celebrating Nagreen and his culinary creation. Evidence about Charlie's contribution to grastronomical greatness is on display in the community museum. The annual Burger Fest, held the first Saturday in August, features the world's largest hamburger parade, burgers, balloons, and blossoms. Menches Brothers 1885, Hamburg, New York. Western New York history recorded that Frank and Charles Menches ran out of pork for their sausage patty sandwiches at the 1885 Erie County Fair. Their supplier, reluctant to butcher more hogs in the summer heat, suggested they use beef instead. The brothers fried some up, but found it bland. They added coffee, brown sugar, and other ingredients to create a taste which stands distinct without condiments. They christened their creation the "Hamburg Sandwich" after Hamburg, New York where the fair has been held since 1868; the name was probably later condensed by common use to the shorter contraction "hamburger" (and so explaining why a beef sandwich--which never contained any pork--bears this name). A little known fact is that the Original Hamburger indeed had its own recipe spiced with coffee and brown sugar - much different from what most Americans have tasted over the last one hundred years. The original recipe is featured at Menches Brothers Restaurants in Akron, Ohio.
Fletcher Davis late 1880s, Athens, Texas. In 1974, The New York Times ran a story about Louis' Lunch being a challenger to the title of inventing the hamburger. According to the McDonald's hamburger chain the inventor was an unknown food vendor at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. Newspaper columnist, Texas historian, and restaurateur Frank X. Tolbert said that this food vendor was Fletcher Davis. Davis operated a cafe at 115 Tyler Street on the north side of the courthouse square in Athens, Texas, in the late 1880s. Local lore holds that Davis was selling an unnamed sandwich of ground beef at his lunch counter at that time. In 1904, Davis and his wife Ciddy, with backing from local business, took their sandwich to the 1904 World's Fair. Fletcher and Ciddy Davis launched their invention from "Old Dave's Hamburger Stand", located on the midway at the fair. A reference to a New York Tribune article written at the time about the fair called a hamburger the innovation of a food vendor on the pike. Tolbert said that Old Dave was Fletcher Davis from Athens. During the 1980s Dairy Queen ran a commercial filmed in Athens, calling the town the birthplace of the hamburger. In November 2006, The Texas State Legislature introduced Bill HCR-15, designating Athens as the "Original Home of the Hamburger".

The small lunch counter is credited by some with having invented this quick businessman's meal when Louis' sandwiched a hamburger between two pieces of white toast for a busy office worker in 1900. Louis' Lunch flame broils the hamburgers in the original 1898 Bridge & Beach vertical cast iron gas stoves using locally patented steel wire broilers to hold the hamburgers in place while they cook. In 2000, the United States Library of Congress credited Louis' Lunch with making America's first hamburger [1].

A hot dog is a type of fully-cooked, cured and/or smoked moist sausage of soft, even, texture and flavor. It is usually placed hot in a soft, sliced bun of approximately the same length as the sausage, and optionally garnished with condiments and toppings.

The flavor of hot dog sausages varies widely by region and by personal preference, as do the accompaniments. The flavor of the sausage can resemble a range of similar meat products from bologna on the bland side to the German bockwurst in the spicier varieties.

Hot dogs are traditionally made from beef, pork, or a combination. Kosher hot dogs are also available, usually all-beef. Unlike many other sausages (which may be sold cooked or uncooked), hot dogs are always cooked before being offered commercially. Unless they have spoiled, hot dogs may be eaten safely without further cooking, although they are usually warmed before serving. Vegetarian hot dogs and sausages, made from meat analogue, are also widely available in most areas where hot dogs are popular.

Hot dogs are also called frankfurters, or franks for short, named for the city of Frankfurt, Germany where sausages in a bun originated, similar to hot dogs, but made exclusively of pork. Another term for hot dogs is wieners or weenies, referring to the city of Vienna, Austria, whose German name is "Wien", home to a sausage made of a mixture of pork and beef. Hot dogs are sometimes called tube steaks.[1] In Australia, the term frankfurt is used rather than frankfurter. In the German speaking countries, except Austria, hot dog sausages are generally called Wiener or Wiener Wurstchen (Wurstchen means "little sausage"). In Swiss German, it is called Wienerli, while in Austria the terms Frankfurter or Frankfurter Wurstel are used.

In the United Kingdom the term hot dog refers to the combination of sausage and bun, with the terms frankfurter or 'hot dog sausage' being more common terms for the sausage itself. As such hot dogs are sometimes made with British sausages, typically cooked by grilling or frying. When prepared using a frankfurter they may be sold and marketed as German or American-style hot dogs.

On the first sunday of Advent, my friend and her family have their ginormous baking day tradition - 31 years in a row now. And last year I was invited to join in, so it is my tradition, too.... I was supposed to work sunday, but it got cancelled - and hooray, I spent a day in the smell of sugar, vanilla and spice, surrounded by warm and sticky bakers of all ages and mainly decorating with homemade icing in all kinds of colours. Everybody bakes and bakes and bakes, 12 sorts of biscuits, from traditional Danish ones to new and exciting recipes, too - and everyone takes home a large tin of biscuits for their own december.

What a lovely day, and christmas can come - I'm ready now!

I had some leftover white cake scraps and oreo cookie buttercream, so this is what I came up with!
I used about 3 cups of white cake scraps, crumbled,
added about a cup of oreo butter cream
and tossed in @ 1/2 cup of leftover cookie crumbs.

after it was a huge smooshed up mess, I used a cookie scoop and rolled them into something that resembles a large truffle, refrigerate for a couple hours and then dipped into some white candy coating!

I'm not a huge fan of oreas, I buy them for my son, and rarely touch them... I prefer things like short bread or sugar cookies.
BUT.... this are sinful!!!! THEY ARE SO GOOD!!!!
the taste if very much "oreo" but the texture is something that's a bit different... very light in the center because I didn't pack the "dough" into the cookie scoop when I was making them! these treats would be a great way to do something a little different than cupcakes or cookies!!
I love to bake all different types of goodies, and I work part time in a bakery/cake shop ..... I haven't had sweets for two weeks, and I broke down today and ate one of these!!! it was worth it, now I'm off to run on the tread mill for about 24 hours!! *~*

The details matched the couples wedding colors.

Otto was born in 1858 to Ole Mattias Pedersen (1820-1914) who worked as a baker; and Thea Johanne Torstensdatter (1825-1865) who may have died in childbirth.

Otto was christened under the name "Otan Olesen" in Vanse parish on March 21, 1858.

Otto's siblings include: Peder Mathias Olsen (1851-?); Theodore Johan Olsen (1852-?); Sopie Marie Olsdatter (1852-after1908); Josette Theresa Olsdatter (1855-?) aka Joletta Olsdatter; Lena Elaine Olson (1860-1938) aka Hannah Eline Olsdatter, who emigrated to Chicago in Illinois in the United States, and married Andrew Jensen (1861-1930); and the youngest was Salmine Sophia Pedersen (1862-1914) aka Salmine Sopie Severine Olsdatter, who married John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) and emigrated to New York City in the United States.

Death of Mother:
Otto's mother, Thea, died at a young age and Ole raised the seven living children alone. Ole never remarried.

Farsund, Norway:
The family was listed in the 1865 Norway Census living in Farsund.

Otto emigrated to the United States in 1877 and he lived in Chicago and worked as a barber. He may have appeared in the 1880 US Census living in Praire Farm, Barron County, Wisconsin, or this may be another Otto Olson.

On September 04, 1884, under the name "Ottan Olsen" he married "Hannah E. Hansen" (1864-1936) at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Chicago. Their marriage certificate was number "57254".

Together they had the following children: Tille Olson (1885-1918) who married Norval Wintrone (1890-1918) and they both died along with their child in the influenza pandemic of 1918; Harry Oliver Olson (1887-1964) who served as a Lieutenant in World War I, married a French woman named Germaine X (1900-1920) who died after two years of marriage in San Francisco, and they had no children; Mabel Olson (1890-1971) who married Jesse Garrett Clay (1888-1976) and had one child and four grandchildren; Norman Otto Olson (1895-1977) who married Isabelle Wickman (1901-1931) and had one child, then he married Eva Folkert (1904-2000) from Germany and had three children; and Helen Olive Olson (1900-1970) who married John Lozinski (1896-1980) and after a divorce married Frank Kirpichoff (1891-1965).

Otto was listed in the 1880-1890 Chicago City Directory as a barber, working or living at 183 Milwaukee Avenue.

Trip to Norway:
In 1897 Otto was visiting his family in Norway. On August 20, 1897 he left from Kristiansand to return to Chicago and he was listed as a barber on the ship's manifest.

Chicago, Illinois:
In 1900 Otto and Hannah were living at 167 Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago and appear in the US Census.

Otto wrote a postcard to his sister, Salmine, and her husband John Winblad on December 25, 1908 and it read as follows: "Mr. John Winblad, 437 Wayne Street, Jersey City, New Jersey, USA, We thank our God, that we're not homeless this Christmas, in snow and storm and slush. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your affectionate brother, Otto Olson". The postcard was postmarked from Chicago, Illinois. This postcard began the search for Otto's descendants.

Coal Dealer:
In the 1910 Chicago City Directory Otto was listed as a coal dealer working at 452 North Union; and as a barber at 465 Milwaukee Avenue, while living at 465 Milwaukee Avenue for both entries. The coal business appears to have not lasted long.

Death of Sister:
His sister Salmine, died of a heart attack on December 18, 1914 while she was visiting Farsund.

Chicago, Illinois:
In 1917 Otto was again listed in the Chicago City Directory as a barber living and working at 465 Milwaukee Avenue.

Otto died in 1921 of "chronic disease of the heart with chronic nephritis" while he was living at 465 Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. Otto's death certificate incorrectly lists his birth year as "1857". It is listed as 1858 in his baptism record at Vanse parish in Farsund, Norway.

He was buried in Mount Olive Cemetery at 3800 North Narragansett Avenue in Chicago.

Hannah died on April 24, 1936 and was buried next to him on April 27, 1936.

There are four extant lines descending from Otto: Tille; Mabel; Norman; and Helen. Otto also had a sister, Lena living in Chicago, but the families drifted apart after Otto's death, so that by 2003 only Hazel Wintrone (1916- ) remembered the Jensen side of the family in Chicago. On June 19, 2004, Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) visited Dorothy Lozinski (1920- ) in Chicago. Dorothy is a grand-daughter of Otto. Otto had two cousins that came over from Farsund: Jakob E. Willumsen (1853-1928) who settled in Minnesota; and Inga
